Increasing access to top tier programs

Every student should have access to the resources they need to succeed. Part of making sure that every student has access to what they need to succeed is first making sure that every parent knows what CMS has to offer and what their community school can provide for their student. Making sure that CMS is responsive to what each community needs and not treating Mecklenburg County as a monolith is also critical to ensuring we are serving each individual student and family the best we can.

Improving outcomes for schools in hardship and keeping CMS on the right track

Overall CMS has seen tremendous progress over the past few years, but that progress hasn’t been spread evenly throughout the district. We need to make sure that our Board is doing everything we can to build a culture in each school that makes CMS a place that teachers want to teach, parents want to send their children, and children want to learn and feel safe doing so. As your next school board representative, I will work to ensure that every CMS family feels included in the decision-making process and create opportunities for families and parents and the local community to become primary stakeholders in schools.

Leading with collaboration

There is no level of government, community organization, or local business that should be disinvested in our children’s future. I will engage with our county commission, Charlotte City Council and the Town Governments in Mecklenburg, as well as nonprofit & business leaders to create third spaces for middle and high schoolers that once brought communities together to support increased socialization, normalization, and community creation. Having spaces like open gyms, pop up skating rinks, talent shows, or lock-ins help children consistently and safely find community and develop the necessary social skills they need for adulthood. To do so I will seek partnership with organizations specializing in youth engagement and advocate for a committee to focus on third-party spaces specifically designed for middle and high school student engagement.
